The love of small business or the fear of large corporations.
One of the many rituals of working in a large corporation is the annual reshuffling of headcount, it seems that in today’s economy companies are cutting back, and cutting back and cutting back. One of the many frustrating things about this cycle of job loss is to whom gets cut. In really serious cutbacks everyone seems to get the letter, but for companies that are cutting back 10-20% who really gets cut are the employees that work hard but are not what I call friends of the boss.
I remember in my old job, we had a saying, if a person was a FOD, better said “a friend of Diane’s” then their jobs were safe. And in my old company Diane was the president of our group. So her friends use to go around sounding concerned of pending cutbacks. But we knew better. So if any of this sounds familiar than you know the joys of working in a large company. No longer does hard work or dedication pay off, rather in today’s economic times it is whom you know. But in many ways it has always been that way.
If you are looking at self employment, or starting your own business it can be one of the greatest joys and greatest risks, but then maybe not, if you own your own business, build it right and work hard at it, you will not get the surprise for not being a FOD. You will however work hard, take risk and maybe start making some money. At least your fate is in your hands.
In this blog, we will look at the many issues of starting a business or running a business or coping with the changing of running a business we will explore how to succeed. Because your success is in your hands, not in a boss foolish enough to risk losing the best employees for a friend. I say not naively but honestly, today a business must have the best working for them, and that means having folks who are honest with their bosses about what works and what does not work. If you are looking to hear just what you want to hear then this site is not for you, but if you want to learn how to really grow your business stay tune…..
