Passion Fuels Even Crazy Ideas: A Lamborghini in the Basement

Yesterday Sam and I had the pleasure of interviewing a couple of new small business owners. Although one was in IT data systems and the other was the publisher of a new glossy magazine, there’s no mistaking their “Fire in the Belly.” We talked about the road an entrepreneur sees before him, and how it’s almost impossible not to follow it once the idea takes hold. It’s like an addiction, or a calling.

Look at ABC’s show Shark Tank, where people bring their small business ideas to a team of investors and make their case for funding. How many of them leave crying and deflated if they don’t get the money? Not too many. The nature of a great idea and the person who thinks it, is indomitable…even when the “greatness” of the idea is in question.

Moral of the story: don’t let anyone tell you your great idea isn’t so good, especially when you suspect they have some unfinished business of their own. You don’t want naysayers on your team anyway. What you need are people who will help you figure out what to do with that awesome brilliant idea of yours. So seek out the folks who think more about possibilities than the pitfalls.

Case in point, I came across this story about Ken Imhoff, the man who built a Lambourghini in his basement (you have to see this to believe it). And then, when it was finished, he knocked a hole in the wall of his basement and drove his masterpiece out into the light of day. I doubt he asked too many people for permission for that stunt.
