Living the Dream, Part 2: Back to Basics
“Gentlemen, this is a football.”
I am reminded of the story of Vince Lombardi: at the beginning of every season, and even when the Packers just came back after a really big win, he would have them start the next practice by getting back to basics.
So what are your basics? What are your core foundations to having a successful business? For me, it is having real goals that I am working for everyday. I remember years ago, I took the sound advice to write out my yearly goals. When I finished thinking about where I wanted my life and career to take me over the coming year, I felt satisfied that I had taken a first step to outlining my vision.
Then I put the notebook back on the shelf and it sat there for at least a full year. When I looked at them the start of the next year, I realized that none of those goals I had so deliberately written down had come true. Was goal setting all wrong? Or maybe I was doing it wrong.
Now I realize that as much as I want to get past the basics, the fact is that goal setting is something that has been taught from the beginning of time. And it’s a practice I continue almost daily now.
Jen and I are working on developing a goal-setting product for folks to use to help them discover their own definition of success and then actually achieve it. So many people I know want to blow past the basics of goal setting. They want to rush to the job at hand. But I want to stop you and ask you, do you really want to be successful? What would you want to do, work hard or work smart? Of course you are going to say, work smart. Well then, let me tell you that having goals is not just for the other guy, or just for some sissy, or for when you have some leisure time to get around to it; but in fact for those who really want to accomplish something.
More than luck, it is setting goals, writing them down, and then frequently reading and evaluating them that shines the brightest spotlight on your future. Start getting back to basics today.
